Plane Invasion group exhibition
8 April, 2015 - 23 April, 2015
The Plane Invasion group exhibition at LSAD Church Gallery
Communication, camaraderie and respect are at the crux of this project. The Plane Invasion is a coming together of friends, loved ones, colleagues and acquaintances of the artist Orlagh Spain.
This project offers the opportunity to start a conversation that begins with Orlagh but will then develop, transform and culminate in an exhibition created from conversations on art, love, loss and camaraderie. The aim is to facilitate an expansion of meaning rather than containing it and limiting the exhibitions’ reception to that of a posthumous retrospective.
The serendipitous finding of a collection of twenty five WW2 encyclopedias is to act as the base for the work and aims to achieve an overall thematic display. Feeling that a posthumous retrospective would not quite have suited the Orlagh Spain ethos it was decided that a showcase of artists’ work in response to the life of Orlagh Spain was far more attractive and exciting. The intent is that the viewer will not so much think of the exhibition as an event in isolation but rather is to be experienced as a celebration and a reflection of the influence one great artist can unwittingly have on their peers. This proposal allows for an equal opportunity for everyone to get together and to create a dialogue; to explore their own work in response to the general theme but also it offers the challenge of creating work from under the shadow of the artist Orlagh Spain.
Exhibitions commonly tell a story, in the case of a one person show they tend to follow a liner and biographical narrative; an exhibition such as the Plane Invasion will be more than this. It will indirectly deal with death, loss, strength of character, resolution, creativity and community. It’s non-linear and divergent display will reflect the strange and wonderful paths we have all chosen in life; let us unite and make the story of the Plane Invasion a great one, for Orlagh.
